Welford Road
The Wanderers managed their first victory away from home this season in a fierce contest at Welford Road against Leicester Extras tonight. Two tries were scored by both teams, but the Wanderers always remained in the lead thanks to a penalty and a conversion by captain Bruce Reihana. Old rivalries were soon stirred up in both packs, as the Wanderers faced former Saints U21s hooker James Buckland, who signed for Leicester in the close season after the U21s World Cup in Johannesburg. Fisticuffs aside though, the Tigers were solid in defence and were only caught off-guard when they were surprised from deep. The first Wanderers' try was from as deep as you could get after the visitors were awarded possession five metres out from their own line. No 8 Darren Fox was the first to burst out of the pile of bodies, ably followed by the rest of the pack, who did most of the hard yards before scrum-half Johnny Howard kept up the momentum into the Extras' 22, quickly followed by wing Jon Sleightholme who fed the ball to Bedford flanker Sasha Harding. The Wanderers kept up their pressure but any attempts of a short run-in from a lineout resulting from a penalty kick to touch, were always well defended by the Extras. It would take another surprise move for these players to be caught on the hop. However, the Wanderers' cause was helped when flanker Ben Gerry was sent to the sin-bin for foul play and Reihana was able to kick for a penalty to take his side to a 0-8 half-time lead. The Wanderers' second try came after just two minutes of play in the second half and was the result of a break made by Reihana following a lineout on the edge of the Extras' 22. Howard again picked up the momentum and went all the way for the try. Reihana converted this try with a kick off the posts and the Wanderers had a comfortable 0-15 lead. But it was not long before the Extras came back, and in fact both their tries were scored by prop Michael Holford from close range. However, neither Tim Taylor or Luke Myring could convert either score, and so the Extras had to be content with their 10 points.
