| The 33-year-old has played in 61 tests for Scotland, three as captain, since his debut against England in 1997.
He also started six back to back Lions tests in South Africa in 1997 then in Australia in 2001.
Since his arrival at Franklin’s Gardens in the summer of 2001, Smith has made 84 appearances for Saints and scored five tries.
Smith, who has recently signed a new two-year deal with Saints, said today: “It was a hard decision to make but one that I know is right for me and my family and it’s definitely the right time to retire. I have enjoyed playing international rugby for Scotland but I am looking forward to devoting more of time to Northampton Saints.”
