Martin Corry, of Leicester Tigers, was named Zurich Player of the Season 2004/05 at last night's Zurich awards dinner. He took the honour ahead of other nominees for the prestigious award including Sebastien Chabal and Mark Cueto, of Sale Sharks, fellow Leicester Tigers player Andy Goode, Ayoola Erinle, of London Wasps, and Pat Sanderson, of Worcester Warriors.
John Wells, of Leicester Tigers, was named O2 director of rugby of the season 2004/05 with Steve Diamond, of Saracens, Warren Gatland, of London Wasps, and Philippe Saint-Andre, of Sale Sharks, also nominated for their guidance of their clubs this season.
Ollie Smith, of Leicester Tigers, won the Land Rover Discovery of the season award 2004/05 for his outstanding performances in the Zurich Premiership this season. Chris Bell, of Leeds Tykes, Harry Ellis, of Leicester Tigers, Matt Stevens, of Bath, and Mathew Tait, of Newcastle Falcons, were also nominated for making their mark.
The Gillette M3Power try of the season award 2004/05 was presented to Bruce Reihana, of Northampton Saints, for his impressive try against Bath. Others nominated included tries from Tom Biggs, of Leeds Tykes, for his try against Leicester Tigers, Terry Fanolua, of Gloucester, for his touch down against Bath, NEC Harlequins’ Ugo Monye for his try against Leicester Tigers, Newcastle Falcons’ Mathew Tait for his try against Saracens, and Tom Varndell’s try for Leicester Tigers against London Wasps.
Other awards presented at the Zurich Premiership End of Season Awards 2004/05 at Twickenham on included The Times Fair Play Award 2004/05 awarded to Bath, the club with the least number of yellow and red cards this season, and the Zurich Champion Award, a special award presented to Leicester Tigers captain Martin Johnson by Zurich for his significant and long lasting contribution to rugby union.
Steve Thompson, of Northampton Saints, was awarded the Powergen community player of the season award 2004/05 for his commitment to community work and his dedication to the sport at several different levels. Among other activities, Steve has organised coaching sessions, opened schools, working with disadvantaged children from many different backgrounds and is an ambassador for the Kick Smoking Into Touch campaign.
The Sky Sports Dream Team 2004/05, chosen by Stuart Barnes and Dewi Morris of Sky Sports, was named as Andy Beattie (Bath), Chris Bell (Leeds Tykes), Duncan Bell (Bath), Bob Casey (London Irish), Sebastien Chabal (Sale Sharks), George Chuter (Leicester Tigers), Mark Cueto (Sale Sharks), Ayoola Erinle (London Wasps), Craig Gillies (Worcester Warriors), Andy Goode (Leicester Tigers), Matt Powell (Worcester Warriors), Bruce Reihana (Northampton Saints), Graham Rowntree (Leicester Tigers), Pat Sanderson (Worcester Warrior) – captain, and Scott Staniforth (London Irish).
