Seely and Mackinnon sign up for extended schools rugby coaching programme
Grant Seely - setting an example
Northampton Saints have been asked to provide rugby coaching and role models to pupils encountering difficulties with settling into the new secondary school environment.
Current squad member Grant Seely and former Saints player and Heineken Cup winner Don Mackinnon are delivering the Northampton Town Learning Partnership Extended Schools project to years seven and eight at Unity College and Weston Favell Secondary School.

The pupils were in middle schools in the town before the two-tier education system was implemented last September. Some of them have found it difficult fitting into a larger environment and being the younger children in the school.

Mackinnon began delivering the project to Unity three weeks ago and Seely started the programme on Monday.

Head of community Sian Haynes said: “Don and Grant provide perfect role models for these youngsters – many of whom have felt unsettled by the change of education system. By channelling their energies into rugby, it gives the pupils something to focus on and makes them feel part of a team to be proud of and will foster their feeling of being part of the new school ethos, improve behaviour and engagement.

This extended school programme will continue until the end of the school term in July and will hopefully be developed into the 2005/06 academic year.
