Gerard makes 36-man European Challenge Cup squad...just
Young No 8 Mark Hopley has been included in the European squad

Northampton Saints newest player, lock David Gerard, signed to the club just hours before today''s European resigtration deadline. The release papers have now been recevied which meant the French international could be included in the 36-man squad for this season's European competition in which Saints have been drawn against Narbonne, Viadana and Bristol in the pool stage.

Five Academy players have also been included in the squad. They are prop Charlie Beech, who is just 18 years old, hooker Dylan Hartley, flanker Mathew Grove, No 8 Mark Hopley and lock/back-row Alex Rae.

Prop Pat Barnard has been left out of the squad as he is still under contract to Western Province, as has Geoff Appleford, who is struggling to return from a shoudler injury.

Saints' European campaign starts in October 22 when Viadana visit Franklin's Gardens.
