However, tomorrow, the squad will wear shirts embroidered with a poppy on the right sleeve and another above their names on the back. The message “Lest We Forget” has also been added under the poppies, and the date of tomorrow’s game embroidered on the bottom of each shirt.
The club has also tried to educate young people about the importance of Remembrance Day with an article on the Bernie’s Gang page in the match day programme and the invitation to 15 members to run out with the players tomorrow and to stand alongside them for the minute’s silence. The programme also contains an interview with former captain and president Ronnie Knapp, who served the RAF during the Second World War.
Director of rugby Budge Pountney said: “Northampton Saints is a traditional club and has always marked this occasion properly. Saints’ first England captain Edgar Mobbs was probably the most famous player to lose his life in the First World War but we are determined not to forget the rest of the Saints players, and indeed all the men and women, who have lost their lives in conflict since then.
“All our players appreciate what this tradition means to the club and are keen to reflect what has become entwined in Northampton Saints’ heritage.
“Lastly, can I urge all our supporters to be in their seats by 12.20pm at the latest so we can all honour this tradition together.” |
