A big, big welcome back to Bristol and their supporters. They will be anxious to get revenge. As their recent results against Leicester and Sale show, they are a side who must be treated with the utmost respect. It is possible that both sides could still qualify for the final stages of this European competition, whatever the result of this match. Bring it on.
Next week, we are away to Viadana and I am looking forward, as I know the players are, to mingling with some of our faithful away supporters. It should be a brilliant weekend.
The following week sees us return to the GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP with a visit here of Leeds. This is a must-win game for us, but of course, a must-win game for them also. So make sure you book your ticket and get behind the team.
The first half of the season could have been better for us. However, it is in adversity we have welded together and the team spirit is high. We have won four out of our last five games, losing only away to Sale. In the league, we have 10 games left, six of them at home. The plan is to claw and fight our way up the table, taking each game as it comes. We have a big squad, a talented squad, capable of greatly improving our league position. Our aim this year is to qualify for next year’s Heineken Cup.
It’s that time of year when the coaches are talking to players about joining the Saints and strengthening our squad for next season. We know where our weaknesses are, and we know who we want to sign. However, this is often a frustrating process. Some players only want to join a team who are playing in the top European competition. Others talk to us but have no desire to join but use us as a way to increase their salaries at their existing clubs. However, we have been there before and we know the score. One very bright spot in regards to next year is the success of our Academy. We have some exciting young players coming through.
When the game went professional 10 years ago, each club has three major tasks. One, to own the freehold of their ground and improve the facilities. Two, build a business where income exceeds expenditure. And three, to build and maintain a constantly successful team. With a good deal of effort and determination, we can build the base of a highly successful team during the next decade. Obviously, there will be disappointments along the way. We are only in the foothills and we have a mountain to climb. I have been impressed by you, our supporters, during this last period of time. I know you often feel frustrated but by and large, you have been tremendously supportive. Everyone at the clubs welcomes this. We are working ceaselessly to give you want you want – a winning team. Stay faithful, your rewards will come. |
