Mark Soden sets his sights on new heights
Mark Soden climbing in Chamonix

It was just last summer when Academy coach Rob Hunter, ex-player Jon Phillips and former director of rugby John Steele completed a trek through the foothills of the Himalayas to Everest base camp. At base camp they took part in the highest game of TAG rugby ever played (5,115 metres above sea level) with the incentive behind this lung-bursting effort to raise awareness and monies for two charities Show Racism The Red Card (SRTRC) and Support Paraplegics in Rugby Enterprise (SPIRE). This year, long-term Saints player Mark Soden has decided to change his rugby boots for his walking boots to attempt to repeat the trek.

Show Racism The Red Card is an anti-racist charity which was established in January 1996 with the aim of using professional sportsman as anti-racist role models. Although racism is on the decline in professional sport, it is unfortunately on the increase in British society. The aim of the campaign is to combat racism through anti-racist education and professional sportsmen are showing the way in terms of making a stand and fighting racism.

This outstanding trek to the base camp of the world’s highest mountain will take Mark through the lush valleys of Sagarmatha National Park, hopefully allowing time for Mark to explore its many villages and monasteries. Eight of the world’s 14 peaks that exceed 8,000m in height are situated in the Nepalese Himalayas. The highest of them all, standing at 8,848m, is Mount Everest.

The trekking adventure starts in Lukla from here the trek to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. The trail will climb through the National Park to the stunning monastery at Thyangboche from here the trek leads to the high point of the trip Kalapathar (5,545m) with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers including Mount Everest. Mark will be embarking on his trek on June 2 and will finish his journey on June 18
