Cambridge Blue to join Saints for new season
Akinluyi in action during the Varsity Match

Cambridge Blue David Akinluyi has signed a two-year contract to join Northampton Saints at the start of the 2006/07 season, subject to passing a club medical. Nigerian-born winger Akinluyi, who scored one of the five tries in Cambridge’s Varsity Match 31-16 win over Oxford in December, is currently studying engineering at Christ’s College.

Akinluyi was educated at St Olave’s Grammar School in Orpington and played for Kent and London & SE at U18s Schools level.

The 22-year-old is the second Cambridge Blue to join Saints in recent years as centre David Quinlan also played in the Varsity Match in 2000. Akinluyi will begin training with Saints in the summer.

Director of rugby Budge Pountney said: “David is undoubtedly a raw talent but he is such a talent that we feel he can come to Northampton and make his mark. He brings inexperience to the top level but a great deal of ability to learn quickly and to develop at a fast rate.”

Akinluyi said: “Just setting foot in Franklin's Gardens makes you appreciate the great support and history the club has. The chance to be part of this, and such an outstanding squad, is a great opportunity and privilege for me. There's a lot that can be learned from both the coaches and players. I hope to contribute as much as I can to the progressive environment and vision within Northampton, and to meeting the goals set by the club and myself.”
