Despite a penalty from London Wasps’ fly-half Daniel Cipriani, after four minutes, England made a slow start against Ireland U19s in their first match of the IRB U19 World Championship and failed to seal the match in the end, going down 16-17. An Ireland missed penalty saved England’s early lead but it was coming up to the 20 minute mark before another Cipriani penalty made it 6-0. With the white pack driving with tremendous force, Worcester’s Sam McDonald was sent to the bin and a penalty to Ireland fly-half Brian Collins made it 6-3. Before the break, however, Saracens’ centre Adam Powell sealed his captaincy with a try, dragging defenders in his wake. Cipriani’s conversion made it 13-3 at half-time. After the break England seemed to be firing with a David Doherty (Leeds Tykes) and Oliver Dodge (Leicester Tigers) flying move coming to grief short of the line when the ball was spilt. However, Ireland's dynamic Collins added a penalty after serious Irish pressure and Matthew Mullan (Worcester Warriors) was on his way to the bin. Three minutes later and a penalty for holding on gave Collins yet another and Ireland were closing fast with 13-9 on the board. Northampton Saints’ prop Charlie Beech came on for front row duty but the worst was not over as Doherty walked after shoulder charging an Irish player off the ball, reducing England to 13-men. Collins put the boot in and the Irish ahead, making it 13-12, and with their centre Keith Earls adding a late try and the clock ticking down, England’s last gasp battling was of no avail.
