Spencer looks forward to first home derby
Carlos thanks the crowd after last weekend's game against Bath
Saints fly-half Carlos Spencer is in confident mood ahead of tomorrow night’s Midlands clash between Northampton and Leicester Tigers, but insists the team still have their feet firmly on the ground. Thanks to form in 2006 that has seen Saints lose only one game in the GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP, the team is now in contention for a spot in next year’s Heineken Cup. A bonus point win against the Tigers would also put the two teams level on points in 4th place, which would leave them battling for the final play-off semi-final position.

Spencer is not going to be complacent against a Leicester side brimming with international talent.

He said: “The team is playing well. We’re full of confidence, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground. Tomorrow is going to be a tough game, and it is all about getting the win. If the side can get four points then I will be very happy.

“We have played well since New Year. It is down to a few things, but mainly confidence. Winning games builds confidence, but we can’t be over-confident.”

The game should be a far cry from Spencer’s debut at Leicester in September, where Northampton were given a 32-0 thrashing. Saints’ new signings have really gelled since and Spencer in particular has given the back-line a noticeable spark.

The former All Black  was chosen for the GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP Player of the Month award in March, thanks to his creation and imperious handling and running. However, he refused to take all the credit for the award.

He said: “It’s about the side not me. We have worked hard as a team and it shows in our results. The award is an honour but it is thanks to my team mates.”

Northampton Saints will be looking for that same team work ethic tomorrow night when they take on Tigers in front of a sold out Franklin’s Gardens.
