Keith Barwell - Sale
“So, what are our expectations of the coming season? Realistically, to qualify for the Heineken Cup. Anything better than that will be an unexpected bonus.” Chairman’s statement, summer 2005.

So, we can tick that box then. I am so pleased for the team and the supporters that we are back on the big stage in Europe – back where we belong. Let’s enjoy this moment, but don’t let’s kid ourselves as we still have a long way to go. We will have to raise our game substantially. But to use one of Bruce Reihana’s favourite phrases: “You have got to be in it to win it.” As soon as we know who is in our pool, we will be organising the away trips – so start saving your pennies.

On the way back from Bristol, we got a phone call from Grant Seely to say we have won the Travis Perkins Sevens at North Walsham. Very satisfying, particularly since we beat Leicester in the semi-final.

A big welcome to Sale today, who have finished top of the GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP – a fine performance in a very difficult league. To illustrate how close it has been this year, we have only won two more games than Bath who are one from bottom and one less game than Wasps, who are fourth. That does not mean, of course, that Sale will win the title. They will need to win the play-offs to do that. That might be more difficult than it seems since London Irish seem to be coming up on the rails like an express train. The GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP has produced some terrific rugby this year and it’s not finished yet. We have played our part, particularly in the second half of the season, playing some open, attacking rugby. I hope today’s game will be a fitting end to what has been a demanding but successful season. After all it is our 125th anniversary!

The bulk of my comments this week should be about you – our supporters. In my annual report, I did say that we would perhaps need two to three years to rebuild the team, that we would cut Budge and Grase a lot of slack and ask them to get on with it. I asked for your understanding and support while this happened. Frankly, you have been brilliant. I promise you, we will move heaven and earth in the next year or two to win some silverware. You are so important and the noise and support you give us is worth a five-point start.

Have a brilliant summer off and don’t forget to order tour season tickets. Every game but one has been a sell-out this year. Don’t miss out. This year, the season ticket package will include two games for what was the Powergen Cup and three home games in the Heineken Cup. We will also be selling season tickets for our car parks. Have a great holiday; see you next season.
