The showcase evening was scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 27, 2006, to decide the best ever Northampton Saints XV based on supporters’ votes from a list of nominees decided by a panel of judges headed by board director Murray Holmes. The player with the most votes would have also been named Northampton Saints’ Greatest Ever player.
Commercial director Allan Robson said: “Unfortunately, we seriously underestimated the impact of the event being held on a bank holiday weekend and this has resulted in many disappointed supporters and, perhaps even more importantly, many of the Greatest Ever nominees being unable to join us on this particular date.”
Mr Robson added: “Indeed, we are so concerned that the integrity of the event should not be jeopardised that we have listened to the feedback we have received and taken the decision to postpone the event until October, which would appear to be more convenient to many more people.”
Supporters that have already bought tickets for this event have been informed of the decision by letter. They will also be the first to know when a rescheduled date is set.
More then 1,200 votes for the greatest ever XV and player have already been received to date supporters are being asked to continue to place their votes, the results of which will be announced at the re-arranged October showcase event.
