Highly-rated Pointon also played for England U19s against Italy in the Six Nations and against Australia at Kingsholm earlier this season. He captained England U18s in their victorious Home Nations campaign too.
Academy director James Sinclair said today: “At just 17, Danny has the potential to be an excellent player and we look forward to developing him at Franklin’s Gardens. We have a strong Academy next year and Danny’s leadership skills will be an important part of the continued development of the group to build on the success of this year.”
Pointon, who can also kick goals, began playing rugby at eight years old and went on to captain every senior school team he has played in from St Peter’s U12s to the 1st XV.
Although Gloucester-born, Pointon will be making a return to his grandfather’s home town when he moves to Northampton in five weeks’ time.
Danny’s father Dave Pointon, director of rugby at St Peter’s and former Gloucester fly-half/centre, said: “Northampton was my father’s home town so there is a family connection with Northampton. I played numerous games at Franklin’s Gardens, as did my brother Robin, who also played for the East Midlands.
“Northampton seems to have an excellent set-up and a good Academy structure in which I feel Danny will develop very well.”
Danny said: “I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead. This is the next stage of my career and I believe Northampton is where I will develop most."
