The 33-year-old, who made 322 appearances during a 13-year career at Franklin’s Gardens, will begin his new appointment in September. A qualified engineer, Phillips is also currently completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) course at Northampton University.
The Saints Academy will move its regular training base for its junior players to Moulton College’s excellent training facilities at the end of June. The first team squad trained at the college last summer while building work was being completed in the South Stand at Franklin’s Gardens.
College principal Chris Moody said: “We are delighted to be strengthening our association with Northampton Saints. Jon’s appointment will reinforce out link and ensure our academy players receive the highest quality coaching. We are particularly pleased Jon has agreed to join the staff as he is an ideal role model for students who wish to continue their education and training while pursuing a sporting career.”
Academy director James Sinclair said: “Our partnership with the college is key to the development of 16 to 18-year-olds in that it provides them with flexible opportunities to combine their study and rugby training. Jon showed an ambition and desire to be involved in the development of future Saints players and this position gives him that opportunity.”
Moulton College is currently considering applications from promising young players for entry in September 2006 and September 2007. For more information, please call Lee Howarth or Angela Temple on 01604 491131.
