New club captain and new shirt for Saints
Northampton Saints announced their new club captain as Bruce Reihana today. Reihana led the side for the many of the games of last season while former club captain Steve Thompson was on international duty. The 30-year-old ex-All Black officially took over the leadership reins today after Thompson stood down from the position.

Head coach Paul Grayson said: “We thank Steve for the effort he put into his term as captain during what was a difficult time for the club. Steve helped stabilise the club during that time and for that, we will always be grateful. Steve expressed a wish to concentrate solely on his own game and we completely support his decision.

“Bruce is Steve’s natural successor in that he led the side on so many occasions last season and has proven himself to be a worthy leader. Bruce has already served us so well as a player that I sure he will do an equally good job as the club’s new captain.”

Reihana said: “It is a huge honour for me to become Saints’ club captain. I was so honoured to lead the side out on occasions last season and will relish this opportunity.”

New captain Reihana also modelled Saints’ new home shirt for the media today. The shirt marks a return to the more traditional hooped style while still maintaining the technological extras required of modern day rugby kit.

A new away shirt will also be available for the 2006/07 season. In line with Premier Rugby rules, the shirt has to be a light colour to contrast the dark home kit and the team management has opted for a white shirt with black, green and gold details. This shirt will be worn with white shorts and white socks.

The home shirt will be available from the end of August but pre-orders are already being taken by Saints shop staff. The away shirt will be available from October.

Commercial director Allan Robson said: “We have returned to the traditional hooped shirt for this season and have opted for a white shirt for our away option after wearing gold for many years. Both shirts have the approval of our players and we hope our supporters will enjoy wearing them too.”
