A roller-coaster end to the season
My beer tasted much better last Saturday night than it did the week before. A trip to Welford Road is always daunting. Reading the Leicester programme gave some clues as to the reasons why. Despite the Six Nations being played, Tigers still managed to field seven international players. Snippets from their programme said: “Pat Howard has never lost a match at Welford Road to an English team either as a player (37 wins) or as a head coach (11 wins, three draws).” Also, “Leicester have not lost at home in the league for three years.”

Before the game, Lewis Moody was talking to the corporate guests and also predicted that the Tigers would win by at le 15 points. Good luck to them; it gives us something to aspire to. They are a great team and a wonderful club. But they were a bit quieter after the game than before it.

We need to play with the same pride and passion this week and for the rest of the season. We have seven GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP games left; my personal target is to only lose two of these. The team is beginning to gel and it’s great to see Bruce Reihana and Stephen Myler back from injury. Hopefully, a few more are on the way back. Obviously, it will be some time off before we know how long Steve Thompson will be out, but I know you all wish him well. Talking to Matt Hampson at Leicester at the weekend reminds of just how much these guys put their bodies on the line for our Saturday afternoon entertainment.

I was pleased to see Carlos renewing his vows to Saints for the next 18 months. Carlos is a great, world class player; it is up to us to get the best out of him. A gifted player, Los can play at 10, centre or full-back, so who knows where he might be popping up. Talking of versatile players, Ben Cohen was doing a pretty good job in the back-row in the final few minutes last week. Well, done mate!

Now enough of last week; we have to try to build on that and today’s task will be very formidable against a Gloucester side who have only lost four games in the league this year and are very determined to get into the play-offs. Dean Ryan and his team will be both physical and fast. On behalf of you all, I welcome the Gloucester team and their supporters.

I need our fans to get behind the team and stay strong until the season ends. We are a great club with fantastic supporters and we need to remain tight-knit, Yes, I know some of the recent results have been gutting, especially our last home result against Harlequins. But when the dust settled, maybe we should have given some credit to Quins, who are the form team in the league.

I’m writing these notes on Monday, so a lot will happen down at the club before you are reading this. Hopefully, we will have announced at least two signings for next year as the process to strengthen the team continues. These announcements will of course have come from Caroline Moore, our communications manager. Her task was to keep the press, public and supporters informed and to keep me quiet! The former she has done brilliantly, I am not so sure about the latter! However, thanks to Caroline and best wishes to you and your family. Welcome aboard to Christian Labit and we look forward to seeing Ben Johnston in action here next season.

Well, fasten your seatbelts and let’s get on the Guinness Premiership rollercoaster once again!
