Ansbro, a 21 year-old centre, is a double Cambridge Blue and two-time Varsity match winner. He has signed a two-year deal that will see him stay at Franklin’s Gardens until the end of the 2008/09 season.
“Joe’s been in our Senior Academy this year but been playing for Cambridge University while completing his medical studies,” said Northampton Saints’ James Sinclair. “Anyone who watched his performance at Twickenham in the Varsity match against World Cup winner Joe Roff last November, will know the potential Joe has.
“He’s a young, English centre, and in those two aspects he fits into the profile of our recruitment policy. He’s also strong in defence and powerful in attack and I’m sure that he will have a big impact in the Saints first team squad.”
“I’m really happy and excited to sign for Northampton,” said Ansbro. “It’s a great opportunity for me to develop as a player and a person with world-class individuals. The club has a bright future and I’m looking forward to be a part of that.”
Chris Budgen signs on for two more years
Northampton Saints’ pack has also been bolstered by Chris Budgen’s signing a two-year extension to his current contract until the end of the 2008/09 season.
The 34 year-old tight-head prop arrived at Franklin’s Gardens in 2001 from Birmingham/Solihull. He has played 130 times for the Saints and scored five tries, and follows in the footsteps of Jon Clarke, Robbie Kydd and Alex Rae to become the latest member of the first team squad to extend his commitment to the club.
“I’m delighted that Chris is staying at the club,” said Sinclair. “Over the years he has proved to be a durable player and his experience will be an asset next season.”
