Touch Rugby is: - A minimal contact sport. - Fun in the summer with your mates. - Played by men and women. - Open to all skill levels. - The game emphasizes running, agility and ball handling skills such as passing and catching. - A game is 40 minutes in duration (2 x 20 minute halves). - You play on a field half the size of a normal rugby field. - Teams consist of a maximum of 14 players, 6 on the field at any one time with rolling substitutes. - The aim is to get more touch downs (tries) than the opposition. - This game is for everyone, social or serious, corporate or casual, amateur or professional. - Touch Rugby is easy to learn and a great way to get in shape.
How does it work? Teams will compete over an 8 week period to battle it out for the winners’ trophy. Squads will consist of six players upwards of which six must play at any one time.
There will be two leagues – a Men’s Open league and a Social League – each consisting of eight teams (please note that the number of total teams will be limited to 16). Mixed teams of men and women are welcome to compete in the Social League. All matches will take place on the training pitches at Franklin's Gardens and changing facilities will be provided if needed.
The leagues are scheduled to start with a practice session on Wednesday July 18th and will run through until Wednesday September 5th when the Saints Touch Rugby League Champions will be crowned. The winners will receive their trophy at half-time during one of Saints home matches.
How do I get started? All you need to get started is an interest in playing and be able to get a bunch of friends together. The sport is renowned for its social side and what better way to enjoy the summer sun than with a game of touch and a drink with friends.
What if I’ve never played before? Don’t worry, the first week is a practice session and is an opportunity to gain an understanding of the rules, regulations and game play under the guidance of Saints staff. Furthermore all the referees will be fully qualified.
How do I enter a team? The cost to enter the league is £350 per squad. For a squad of 12 players this equals only £3.70 per player per week. Each team will also receive special ticket offers for a Saints home match.
