Pen: Whitehead (45)) Coventry picked up their first win of the season and collected a try bonus point along the way in this victory over Rotherham who slipped to a third defeat of the season. Coventry were ahead after just a minute with centre Ronnie McLean going over for a try and he added the conversion to make it 7-0. It was 14-0 after 26 minutes when prop Dave Maddocks went over and again McLean converted. McLean made it 17-0 in the first minute of the second half with a penalty goal. The Titans were finally on the board after 45 minutes when Mike Whitehead put over a penalty goal. They were right backing it 10 minutes later when second row Luis McGowan went over for a try and Whitehead converted. A double from stalwart winger Kurt Johnson gave the home side the win as he went over for two tries in three minutes to make it 29-10 after 70 minutes. ESHER 23 SEDGLEY PARK 30 Esher: Tries: Hewitt (40), Campbell (70), Henderson (72). Con: Hallett. Pens: Hallett 2 (8, 48). Park: Tries: Craig (23), Albinson (34), Briers (58). Cons: Jones 3. Pens: Jones 3 (5, 12, 61) Sedgley Park pick up their second win of the season as Esher go down to their fourth defeat of the season. Phil Jones kicked the visitors in front on 5 minutes but three minutes later Neil Hallett levelled for Esher. Jones added another penalty goal soon after and when he converted a try form centre Andy Craig they were 13-3 ahead. On 34 minutes scrum half Jamie Albinson touched down, Jones converted and they were 20-3 ahead. Just before the break Esher were in for a try as fly half Dave Hewitt touched down and they went in 12 points down. Hallett slotted over a penalty goal early in the second half but a 10 point burst in three minute around the hour mark took Park 19 points clear as left wing Chris Briers went in for a try, Jones converted and put over a 3rd penalty. Two tries in two minutes saw Esher get back to within striking distance as hooker James Campbell and centre Rob Henderson touched down and Hallett added a conversion but they could not get another score to try and draw level with Park and had to settle for a losing bonus point. EXETER CHIEFS 27 BEDFORD BLUES 6 Exeter: Tries: Drauniniu (3), Blythe (53), Parkes (68). Cons: Gray 3. Pens: Gray 2 (24, 31.) Blues: Pens: Elrick 2 (47, 59) Exeter Chiefs made it five out of five with this home win over Bedford Blues at Sandy Park. It took them just three minutes to get on the scoresheet with winger Josh Drauniniu going over for a try and Danny Gray added the conversion and later in the half added a couple of penalty goals to make it 13-0 at half time. Half time replacement John Elrick pulled three points back for the Blues seven minutes into the second half but six minutes later the Chiefs were 20-3 ahead after a try form hooker Sam Blythe and Gray converted. Elrick pulled three more points back for the visitors but it was the Chiefs who got the final score. Prop Dan Parkes went over for the third Chiefs try on 68 minutes and Gray again converted. LAUNCESTON 10 MOSELEY 25 CAB: Try: Alred (66). Con: Alred. Pen: Alred (36). Moseley: Tries: Sharples (5), Penalty Try (39), Atkinson (70). Cons: Jones 2. Pens: Jones 2 (37, 57). Big win for Moseley in a match both sides were desperate to win and the win takes Moseley into 7th place in the table and leaves the Cornish All Blacks second bottom of the table. It was Moseley who were first on the scoreboard with winger Charles Sharples going over for a 5th minute try and a 5-0 lead. Stuart Alred pulled three points back for the home side on 36 minutes but a minute later Matt Jones responded for the visitors. Just two minutes later he was converting a penalty try and Moseley went in 215-3 ahead. Jones extended the Moseley lead 17 minutes into the second half with a 2nd penalty goal. The home side did manage a try when Alred went over on 66 minutes to put them within eight of the visitors. Moseley wrapped up the win on 70 minutes when second row Oliver Atkinson went over and Jones converted. NEWBURY 28 CORNISH PIRATES 48 Newbury: Tries: Fincken (50), Rainbow (75), Styles (78), Hylton (80). Con: Walsh. Pen: Walsh (15). DG: Walsh (1) Pirates: Tries: Kemp (6), Bolt (35), Cracknell (48), Gesinde (55), Devlin (61), Thomas (65). Cons: Steenson 6. Pens: Steenson 2 (27, 40) It was a high scoring match at Monks Lane with the Pirates leaving with all five points on offer after a 10-try game. Tim Walsh gave the home side the lead with a 1st minute drop goal but just five minutes later the Pirates were over for their first try of the match with hooker Nathan Kemp touching down and Gareth Steenson converted. Walsh added a penalty goal on 15 minutes before Steenson responded for the visitors. The Pirates went over for a second try on 35 minutes when scrum half Richard Bolt scored and Steenson converted and put over a late penalty goal to make it 20-6 at the break. A third Prates try came on 48 minutes with flanker Chris Cracknell going in for his 4th of the season and Steenson was again on target. Two minutes later and Newbury were over the Pirates line for the first time as hooker Paul Fincken scored his first try for the club. Three tries in ten minutes changed the game completely as the Pirates went into a 48-11 lead after 65 minutes. Steenson converted all three of the tries and on the day kicked eight out of nine for an 18 point return. Newbury to their credit bit managed to score three tries in the final five minutes to claim a four try bonus point but the win was already the Pirates. NOTTINGHAM 34 DONCASTER KNIGHTS 40 Nottingham: Tries: Hammond (17), Penalty Try (28), Raven (37), Duffey (77), Molenaar 80). Cons: Barlow 2, Stenhouse. Pen: Barlow (45). Doncaster: Tries: Wilson (4), Bishop (22), Van Vuuren (47), Bailey (65). Cons: Woodrow 4. Pens: Woodrow 4 (10, 40, 54, 73). Doncaster maintained their 100% start to the new season with the away win over Nottingham in a high scoring match. Nottingham actually out scored the visitors five tries to four but the boot of Mark Woodrow proved decisive. Doncaster were 10-0 up after 10 minutes after a try form No 8 Glen Wilson, Woodrow converted and put over his first penalty of the afternoon. Nottingham were off the mark on 17 minutes when flanker Craig Hammond went over for an unconverted try. Five minute later Doncaster were 17-5 ahead after winger Justin Bishop touched down and Woodrow converted. Nottingham looked to be going in at half time ahead after they were first awarded a penalty try and then on 37 minutes second row Sam Raven went over for a try and Tom Barlow converted them both for 19-17. In injury time Doncaster regained the lead when Woodrow put over a penalty goal. Nottingham were back in front five minutes into the 2nd half when Barlow put over a penalty goal. Back came Doncaster with 20 unanswered points to move into a commanding 40-22 lead after 73 minutes. They were tries for wingers Van Vuuren and Bailey; Woodrow converted them both and put over a couple of penalty goals. Nottingham did manage two late score which were good enough for them to pick up a couple of bonus points if not the win. PERTEMPS BEES 20 LONDON WELSH 24 Bees: Tries: Grove (7). Pens: Higgins 5 (33, 54, 57, 60, 68). Welsh: Tries: Evans, (66), Penalty try (77), Hannon (80). Cons: Marks 3. Pen: Ulph (15). London Welsh are into the top half of the table after this away win at Sharmans Cross over the Pertemps Bees. The Bees were first on the scoreboard with winger Alex Grove going over for a 7th minute try and a 5-0 lead. Sam Ulph got the visitors on the scoreboard on 15 with a penalty goal but later in the half Jon Higgins put on over for the home side and they led 8-3 at the break. Higgins added four more penalty goals to kick the home side into a 20-3 lead after 63 minutes and they looked to be on their way to a first win of the season. The Welsh though had other ideas and replacement Greg Evans got the over the bees line on 67 minutes as they started a comeback. Next the Welsh were awarded a penalty try and Tomas Marks again converted to make it 20-17 to the Bees with three minutes remaining. Six minutes into injury time the Welsh snatched the win as prop Colm Hannon was awarded a try and Marks again added the extras. |
