Northampton Saints today announced the appointment of Nick Johnston as the club’s new Head of Performance.
Johnston comes to Franklin’s Gardens from Sale Sharks, where he has been Head of Physical Preparation since 2004. He was part of the backroom team that guided the Sharks to the Guinness Premiership title in 2006 and the European Challenge Cup in 2005. He has also worked for the Welsh Rugby Union.
In his newly-created role of Head of Performance Johnston will oversee the Saints’ physio and conditioning departments from the beginning of the 2008/09 season.
He is excited by the prospect of joining the Saints.
“Northampton is a massive club that deserves success and I’m looking forward to being a part of the team that works towards that,” said Johnston. “Jim Mallinder knows exactly where he wants the team to be and I’m relishing meeting that challenge.
“The facilities at Franklin’s Gardens are second to none and there are some superb players at the Saints. It is a club that is going places.
“I’ve had an enjoyable few years at Sale and would like to thank everyone at Edgeley Park.”
“Physical preparation is crucial for a successful team,” said Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder. “Nick has played a key role in Sale’s recent success, especially their Premiership title in 2006, and is a top class addition to our backroom staff. I’m looking forward to working closely with him as we take the club forward.”
“Nick’s appointment completes another piece of our coaching jigsaw and will help entrench a winning culture at Franklin’s Gardens,” said Saints chief executive Allan Robson. “Everyone here wants success and Nick knows what it takes to win in the Premiership. If we want a world class team on the pitch we need a world class team off it and Nick is a key appointment for us. Sale have been renowned for their excellent physical conditioning in the past few years and I’m sure Nick’s work will have a similar effect here.”
