Northampton Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder today praised Chris Ashton and Dylan Hartley for their call-ups for the England Saxons squad.
“Chris and Dylan are both talented players who have worked hard this season,” said Mallinder. “They deserve this opportunity and I’m sure they will do well in the England set-up.”
For Ashton the call-up is the latest chapter in the spectacular start to a rugby union career that has seen him score 20 tries in 17 first team appearances.
Mallinder believes that the winger will learn a lot from the Saxons.
“Chris has been eager to learn about rugby union since he arrived in August,” he said. “He asks a lot of questions and has tried to improve the aspects of the game that are new to him, such as the breakdown. He has a lot of potential and training in a new environment with some talented players will add to his game.”
But Mallinder also warned that both players should not let selection go to their heads.
“They have been selected for their performances so far this season and their future potential,” he said. “Their challenge is now to keep working and improving their games and helping the Saints to win promotion.”
