Northampton Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder says that tomorrow’s EDF Energy National Trophy Round 5 match at Doncaster presents its own unique challenges.
The game is the first of a double-header against the Knights with the Saints visiting Castle Park next weekend in National League One. Mallinder says that the two matches have little bearing on each other.
“Doncaster are a side full of quality who will test us across the park,” he said. “The cup is important to both sides with a final at Twickenham and a trophy on offer. I’m expecting a full-blooded match.
“The Knights have been one of the best sides we’ve faced this season and they gave us a massive scare at Franklin’s Gardens. They will be an even tougher proposition on their own ground. As always we’re relishing the challenge.”
There are two notable returnees to Mallinder’s squad. Barry Everitt and Paul Shields are both named in the 25-man squad along with Alex Rae, who was rested last week, Dylan Hartley, named on the bench for tonight’s England Saxons game against Ireland, and Dave Ward, who could make his first Saints appearance since October.
Should he play tomorrow, Paul Diggin will reach the 50 appearance mark for the Saints.
