Launceston and Northampton Saints have received the backing of First Division Rugby and the RFU to switch the postponed National League One match between the clubs to Franklin's Gardens on Tuesday, March 4th, kick-off 8:00pm.
The original fixture at Polson Bridge on December 8th, 2007 was cancelled due to an unsafe pitch. With both sides being in the quarter finals of the EDF Energy National Trophy no free weekends had become available for the rearranged fixture and it was apparent that a midweek clash was inevitable. However, concerns regarding the floodlights at Polson Bridge prompted Northampton to offer to have the fixture played at Franklin’s Gardens.
This proposal was supported by the rest of the league this week.
“It was obviously very disappointing for us not to be able to hold the original fixture,” said Launceston commercial manager Adrian Cameron. “We had been looking forward to Northampton coming to Polson Bridge once the fixtures were announced and it was unfortunate that the first game could not be played, but the extraordinary conditions were out of our control.
“With the game having to be played midweek we have to accept that the floodlights at Polson Bridge are not to the standard befitting such a fixture. However, we are looking forward to playing at Franklin’s Gardens twice – both occasions will live long in the memory of the Cornish All Blacks.”
“We have enjoyed our travels in National League One this season,” said Saints chief executive Allan Robson. “Even though the original game was postponed several hundred Saints fans still enjoyed a good day out at Polson Bridge.
“A midweek game is not ideal for travel arrangements but it is the only practical solution, particularly as Launceston have another game to rearrange as well as this one. We also have to remember that the league must finish on April 26th. With this in mind we agreed with Launceston that it was in the best interests of both clubs to rearrange this game as soon as possible.
“We want to help as many fans of both clubs come and support their teams. Part of our arrangement with Launceston is that their supporters who bought tickets for the original fixture are entitled to a free ticket for this game at Franklin’s Gardens. However, we also recognize that this is an extra game which our supporters had not been planning on so we have agreed to slash ticket prices for this game.
“Everyone at the club would like to see as many Launceston and Northampton shirts in the stands as possible for what will be an historic occasion.”
Tickets for Launceston v Northampton Saints, to be played at Franklin’s Gardens, are now on sale from the Saints Ticket Office on 01604 581000.
Prices, both seating and standing, are as follows:
Adults - £13
Concessions - £10
Juniors - £2
Saints season ticket holders will have their own seat reserved for them until 12 noon on Saturday, 23rd February .
Pledge season ticket holders (who are entitled to a free cup match as part of their season ticket package) are invited to substitute their cup match entitlement for a ticket for this away league match against Launceston. The club has reached this decision in anticipation of a potential away cup semi-final, should the Saints beat Bedford. The three cup ties so far have all been drawn away from home!
Saints supporters who still have their tickets from the original fixture can exchange and upgrade them for a ticket at this match.
