Saints U19s couldn't back up their impressive performance of a week earlier against England U18s in Saturday's trip to Leicester. Fielding only one U19 it was a chance to see some younger JSA players, with nine U17s in the squad. The Tigers proved too strong and ran out 27-7 winners.
With a tricky crosswind to contend with both sides struggled to put together any threatening attacks in the first half. Leicester took the lead with a penalty which was nearly cancelled out by Saints but for the intervention of the post. Then 10 minutes later, after a sustained period of attack, the other post denied brining the Saints level. Driven lineouts were gaining good yardage and had it not been for some poor handling under pressure the Saints backline may have capitalised.
The Leicester side started the second half with a bang and quickly scored three tries, taking them to a comfortable 20-0. The Saints side could not match the physicality shown by the Leicester side, particularly their wingers who made several line breaks. Some poor decision making around the fringes failed to relieve Saints of pressure and another score was conceded with 10 minutes to go.
The Saints did finally get on the score sheet when centre Nick Greenhalgh ran under the posts to make the final score 27-7. Despite the loss (the first since the pre-season against The Ospreys) this will give the Saints an opportunity to learn from the defeat and work on some areas of the game before next week’s U19s game against Bedford.
