Northampton Saints has announced the five nominees for the January Let Yourself Grow Player of the Month award.
January was another good month for the team. Although the unbeaten run came to an end at Thomond Park, the bonus points won against Munster and Perpignan were enough to see the Saints qualify for the Heineken Cup quarter finals for the first time in three years.
There was a last-gasp win over London Irish to cement the team's place in the top four of the Guinness Premiership, and an away win at Sale Sharks to keep LV= Cup semi-final hopes very much alive.
The nominees are:
JON CLARKE
Without Jon's last-gasp try against Perpignan it is very possible that the Saints would not have qualified for the Heineken Cup semi-finals, as it gave the men in black, green and gold a much needed bonus point. It was a cracking finish that left the defence for dead. But Jon has also been a rock in defence as well, and a big reason why neither Perpignan or Munster came close to scoring a try against the Saints.
PHIL DOWSON
The December Player of the Month award winner has continued his high standards throughout January, winning the man of the match award for his performance against London Irish. Phil also earned a recall to the England Saxons Six Nations squad and won the man of the match award in the win over Ireland 'A'.
IGNACIO FERNANDEZ LOBBE
With the Saints facing one big game after another, Ignacio's talents and leadership skills have come to the fore. His standout performance came against Munster, when time and again his work at the breakdown slowed up Munster's ball to allow the Saints' defensive line to get back into position. Nacho's month finished by leading the team to their LV= Cup win over Sale.
BRIAN MUJATI
With his powerful performances against Perpignan and Sale, Brian has shown the pedigree that saw him be a first choice prop for the Springboks. Moreover he also showed his flexibility, playing tight-head against the French champions and then loose-head for the trip to Edgeley Park. In both cases the opposition pack was well and truly neutralised.
EUAN MURRAY
Euan is now back to his best, and his powerful scrummaging both helped set up the win over Sale and rocked Munster to their core. Indeed, the Irish Independent said that Munster prop Wian du Preez "will return to South Africa having nightmares about Euan Murray". It speaks volumes about a player who has understandably been called into the Scottish Six Nations squad.
Voting is open now and lasts until 5pm on Wednesday, February 10th. The winner will be presented with his award after the Guinness Premiership game against Newcastle Falcons on February 13th.
