Firstly, a very happy New Year to you all. 2008 will be a massively important year for the Saints as we continue to re-build. This will be especially so during the first four months as we fight to take our place back in the Guinness Premiership.
Anyone who thought National League One rugby would be just a stroll in the park for us is being proved wrong. Every week the opposition sides are raising their game with a common comment from them being “that was our best performance of the season.”
The good news is we have played 17 games in the league and remain unbeaten. The Wanderers are also undefeated in the Guinness ‘A’ League. The bad news is despite that great run of form we are still only six points clear at the top of the league. All of us have to gird our loins for one more massive push.
As the chairman I always feel I am asking something of you. If I have leaned anything over this last year it is that the Saints is nothing without its shareholders, supporters and sponsors. I promise you your day will come.
The last home game here saw us breaking the record for attendances at a National League One game with a gate in excess of 12,800. No Premiership team bettered that on that weekend. Today we expect to set a new record as we welcome our friends and rivals from Bedford. After taking us very close at Goldington Road they will be trying to go one better today. Expect them to throw everything at us.
There are quite a few ex-Saints who will be on show such as Jon Phillips, Matt Allen and Dan Richmond. They will all be looking forward to another game at the Gardens.
Get behind the team and shout them to victory in what I’m sure will be a tight and exciting encounter.
Next week sees a break from the league as we go into the fourth round of the EDF Energy National Trophy. We were handed a tough fixture away at the Cornish Pirates, who also happen to be the holders. They won’t relinquish their title easily.
Nevertheless this is a competition we have earmarked to win with the final at Twickenham on Saturday, April 12th. It has been too long since our supporters graced headquarters.
Let’s make 2008 our year, on all fronts.
