Rugby News Lawes: Coming back against Australia to win is a good feeling

Courtney Lawes returned to the England starting line-up on Saturday afternoon, helping the national team overcome Australia in the first of their three Autumn Internationals.

Saturday’s game was just the second time the 24-year-old lock had started for England in the last year, and he earned plaudits for his performance, not least his lineout management.

However England had to come back from a 6-13 half-time deficit to win back the Cook Cup, and with 14 unanswered points after the break they did just that.

“It was a tough game,” Lawes acknowledged. “But to have gone into half-time losing and then to come back is a good feeling.

“In the first half we didn’t get into our shapes properly, but rallied and regrouped during the break, upped the energy a bit more and in the second half they couldn’t live with us.

“We could easily have lost that game, but pulled it back brilliantly and held on for the win.

“We’ve got a young squad throughout, which is good. We’re gaining experience together and wins like this are really crucial.”

Lawes was one of five Saints in the England match day 23, with Lee Dickson and Tom Wood joining him in the starting team, Dylan Hartley coming off the bench and Ben Foden an unused replacement.

Having such a large contingent from Franklin’s Gardens is down to the collective form of the Saints team as well as on an individual basis, according to Lawes.

“The Saints boys are on top form at the moment,” he added. “That’s due to our club form as well, but it’s still onwards and upwards and I think we’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

England are back in action this coming Saturday against Argentina (KO 2:30pm). You can watch all the action live from Twickenham on the screens in the bars throughout Franklin’s Gardens before the Saints’ LV= Cup opener against Gloucester.
