Rugby News SAINTS 33 GLOUCESTER 6 Waller credits team and fans after celebrating his century

Alex Waller may have taken home the Casillero del Diablo after capping his one hundredth first team appearance with a Travis Perkins man of the match performance, but he was full of praise for the rest of the team on the pitch and the fans in the stands.

An impressive 12,870 supporters packed into Franklin's Gardens for the LV= Cup opener, and while wing Ken Pisi and replacement scrum-half Alex Day may get the headlines for their two tries apiece, the bonus point win over Gloucester was built on a dominant performance from the pack.

This was especially so at the scrum, with Waller at the heart of the effort.

"If you'd have asked me four years ago I wouldn't have guessed I'd be achieving this now, but I'm just proud to be involved with a win on my hundredth," he told SaintsTV. "I might get a bit of the limelight for getting my hundredth, but it was definitely a team performance."

The win over the Cherry and Whites was the Saints' fifth on the trot at Franklin's Gardens this season. Four of those have brought bonus points, and Waller said that it was important to keep that form going, adding: "We're making this place a fortress again and that's what we need to do. We don't like to lose at home, and neither do the fans, and it's fantastic to give them that result."

Waller's hundredth appearance came nearly four years to the day after his debut, also in the LV= Cup. And another player who will have the tournament as a fond memory is Day, whose two late tries sealed the maximum haul.

The Suffolk youngster won the Junior World Championship with England Under-20s last summer, and he says that the Saints Academy system has prepared him for this level.

"Saints do a great job with the Academy boys, and we train with the first team week in, week out, and with the amount of internationals we've got it can only be good for us," he said.

"Tonight showed the strength in our squad, that we can put a strong Gloucester team away like that, especially with a lot of guys to come back."
