Academy News Saints wingers earn England Under-18 selection
Having each made first team debuts over the past fortnight of action, Saints Academy duo Howard Packman and Josh Skelcey have been called up to the England Under-18 squad to face Australia on Wednesday, December 4th.
Packman, who made starts in both of the LV= Cup wins over Gloucester and London Irish, bagged his first senior try at the Madejski Stadium and is also part of the England Under-20 squad for the 2013/14 season.
Fellow Senior Academy flyer Skelcey, meanwhile, came on for the final throes of the Saints’ win in Reading, replacing Packman in the process.
Both Packman and Skelcey were part of the squad that were crowned European champions earlier this year in France.
Head Coach John Fletcher is looking forward to taking on southern hemisphere opposition.
“This is a great opportunity to test ourselves against a side that we know will want to play an attacking style of rugby,” Fletcher commented.
“The squad is a good blend of experience and youth. There are players who won the FIRA/AER European Championship last April, players who toured South Africa in the summer and some younger players who we are looking to bring through.
“We’ll work closely with the England Under-20s management – Nick Walshe and Ian Peel – as there are players involved who will be in their thoughts, and it also gives them the opportunity to take a look at the next crop in a competitive game.”
