The Saints Under-18s prepared for next weekend’s Academies League east midlands derby with a powerful second half display to see off a strong St. Joseph’s College side at BBOB RFC on Friday evening.
There was just a point between the sides at half-time, despite the youngsters in black, green and gold outscoring their visitors by two tries to one. But six more after the break saw them surge clear, allied with a 13-point haul for Harry Mallinder.
St. Jo’s kicked an early penalty but two tires in six minutes appeared to have handed the home side the advantage after a strong start for both teams.
Conor Bullivant was first over, an attempted chip and chase from St Joseph's caught by the Saints winger, whose momentum took him through and over the line.
Having converted the opening score, Mallinder was heavily involved in the second, breaking the line and sending Tristan Rawcliffe under the posts on the inside – his attempt at the extras again successful.
St. Jo’s would respond before the break though and through one of their Saints Academy contingent, George Wacokecoke. A solid scrum set the platform and after a smart switch in play, the winger proved too hot to handle for his teammates, burning off defenders and sliding over.
With that score maximised in addition to an earlier penalty, the sides turned around at 14-13, but it didn’t take long for the Saints to put their foot to the floor and kill off the game.
A show of strength from Ollie Lyons saw the back row force his way through two defenders to reward a dominant start and with Mallinder again carving the St. Joseph’s backline open, Michael Morris went in for number four.
St. Jo’s again hit back, going in on the left two minutes later but as the temperature continued to drop, the Saints kept the heat on
Forward pressure resulted in a yellow card for another Saint in St.Jo’s colours, Karl Wilkins, and just moments later a regular second row partner of his would be mauled over, Josh Peters with the first of an evening double.
The best was yet to follow, a rapid breakout from inside the Saints’ own 22 ending in Mallinder’s brilliant score, offloading between the centre and Bullivant particularly pleasing on the eye.
Peters weighed in with his second try on the hour and with the pack rampant, George Cox crashed through for number eight, just a minute left on the clock.
The Saints Under-18s will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, heading to Leicester for Round 2 of the Premiership Rugby Academies League and looking to avenge a defeat to their derby rivals earlier in the season.
