Rugby News Dickson: Time to focus on winning in Heineken Cup
Lee Dickson says that the Saints’ attention will now all be on getting two wins from their next two Heineken Cup matches to keep the team in contention for a European quarter final spot.
Since winning in Dublin in mid-December the Saints have been unbeaten in the Aviva Premiership, with victories away at London Wasps and at home against top four rivals Bath and Harlequins.
Despite that away win over Leinster the Saints still find themselves four points behind the Dubliners going into the final two rounds of matches.
Dickson insists that there is still plenty to play for, with the team looking for two wins from Rounds 5 and 6 to keep the pressure on Leinster, but that it will be a big challenge against an Ospreys outfit sitting third in the Pro 12 and the reigning French champions, Castres.
“We’re putting the Aviva Premiership to bed for a little bit and concentrating on the Heineken Cup,” the scrum-half said.
“Things have been going well in the Premiership, but now we’ve got to get the next two Heineken Cup games and take some points from them and see what happens after that.
“It’s going to be a really big challenge. But all we’ve got to do is worry about ourselves. We can’t worry about what’s going on elsewhere.
“We’ve got to make sure we go down to Ospreys, do well away from home and get a win. Then it’s Castres back here on a Friday night, and hopefully we’ll get a win from that as well.
“Then it’s in other peoples’ courts. We’ve just got to keep on winning.”
Tickets are on general sale now for the visit of Castres on Friday, January 17th – the first time a reigning Top 14 champion club has played a competitive game at Franklin’s Gardens for many years.
