Club News Waller ready to seize Saxons chance
While his inclusion in the England Saxons training squad for the next fortnight is a first England call-up for Alex Waller, the prop is already keen for a piece of the action to show what he can do on an international stage.
Remarkably, the 23-year-old – who has already passed a century of appearances in black, green and gold – never represented his country at a youth level.
Having now earned his chance with a series of powerful scrummaging displays in 2013/14 though, Waller will waste no time when he links up with the Saxons setup.
“I’m really excited to be involved and to hopefully step up another level and prove myself on that stage,” the loose head told SaintsTV. “I’m looking forward to it.
“Graham [Rowntree] rang me when the initial squads were announced and told me that I’d likely be moving into the Saxons. Obviously every rugby player wants to play for their country and hopefully I can prove myself in that Saxons squad for two weeks and maintain a bit of momentum when I come back to the Saints for some big games.”
Waller’s form has come as little surprise to those at Franklin’s Gardens and the number one shirt has now been his for each of the last 12 games across the Premiership and Heineken Cup. He is still taking nothing for granted, however, and also paid tribute to the team effort so far in 2013/14.
“I’ve tried to keep my head down and work hard every week,” he added. “After that the performances and results look after themselves and I’m enjoying my rugby. I’m getting a lot of game time, which I’m thankful for and hopefully I’m doing the shirt justice.
“The team are doing well though and obviously in the pack I’m only one of eight. Without the rest of the guys it wouldn’t be the same situation. The likes of Stephen Myler and Luther Burrell are performing well behind us too and also getting their rewards, so the whole team are functioning brilliantly.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying the season – it’s been my best yet – and I’m just looking forward to the rest to see what it holds.”
