SAINTS U18 44 SALE 8 Youngsters go top of Academies League

Academy News SAINTS U18 44 SALE 8 Youngsters go top of Academies League

The Saints Under-18s ran in six tries on Saturday afternoon to see off Sale in a third bonus win on the bounce, moving into pole position for qualification from the Northern Conference in the process.

Two of those scores came before the break to set the foundations for a dominant win and with the extra point wrapped up after just 45 minutes, the young Saints raced clear of their visitors at Franklin’s Gardens.

A strong opening salvo was rewarded with a well struck Harry Mallinder penalty and just five minutes later the centre would continue his recent good form in open play, too, rounding defenders and teeing up Rotimi Segun for his third try in as many games.

It was almost four for the powerful wing too, but with the bounce of the ball evading him on a smart chip and chase, the hosts instead mauled Jordan Onojaife over for an 18-3 advantage at half-time.

With Sale also a man down at the resumption, George Wacokecoke registered number three with a scintillating finish, his first of two on the afternoon, and though the Sharks hit back quickly it would be their only try of a tough afternoon.

Full back Tristan Rawcliffe broke the visiting defence open to wrap up the bonus point and Wacokecoke doubled up shortly after as the Saints backs continued to cause Sale all sorts of problems.

Though that looked like being the final score of an entertaining afternoon, with 60 seconds left on the clock replacement George Furbank got in on the action to ensure his side moved top of both the league and try scoring charts.

It will be a straight showdown with Gloucester at the Gardens for first place and an Academies League semi-final on February 8th - victory all the more important given Leicester’s ability to leapfrog the losers into second spot.
