Club News Dolan settling swiftly at Saints
Despite only being at the club for a week, back row forward Cam Dolan is already starting to feel comfortable in a professional rugby environment with the Saints.
The six-cap US Eagle arrived at Franklin’s Gardens from Life University in Georgia and with a handful of training sessions under his belt alongside the likes of England call-ups Tom Wood and Calum Clark, the 23-year-old is already eager for a taste of action in black, green and gold.
“I’ve been made to feel extremely welcome,” he told SaintsTV in an exclusive first interview. “From day one everyone has gone out of their way to introduce themselves to me and show me around so it’s all been very good.
“I’ve had five or six training sessions with those guys and from day one it was definitely a bit of a step up. I think I’m finding my ground pretty quickly though.
“When I get my chance I’ll have some big shoes to fill but hopefully I can do my job and help the team here.”
Florida-born Dolan, who caught the eye in USA’s autumn clash with New Zealand Maori, also revealed that he had eyes on becoming a Saint long before the club came knocking for his signature.
“To be honest with you I came here with Team USA as an under-18 and played Northampton and we got our tails whipped. Just looking at the club though and the way they carried themselves here – I’ve been a fan ever since which makes it that much sweeter to come here and play.”
Director of rugby Jim Mallinder is looking forward to seeing Dolan making an impact with the club, but also called for patience as the number 8 finds his feet in the professional game.
“It’s always difficult when you join halfway through a season but Cam and Fats [Autagavaia] have really fitted into the team well,” he commented.
“We’re being a little bit patient with Cam – he’s still got a bit to learn about how we work in the forwards and some of the lineout plays we run, but he’s settled in really well and we’re looking forward to seeing how he progresses in the second half of the season.
“He’s got a huge amount of potential – that’s what we saw in him and if he rises to the challenge there will be opportunities for him to progress all the way.”
