Rugby News Mallinder: Tough run starts with Worcester

Having seen his side go top of the Aviva Premiership with a late win at Exeter, director of rugby Jim Mallinder stressed that the Saints won’t be getting carried away with their league position, even if it did make the four-hour trek home more bearable on Saturday evening.

“It’s a great feeling and we can enjoy the moment as we always do,” he told SaintsTV post match. “It makes a long coach journey home a lot more enjoyable and we like to celebrate our wins, but then we’ve got to start thinking about next Saturday.

“We’ve got lots of tough rugby still to come and that starts with Worcester at home.”

Given the conditions, it was never likely to be a game controlled by one side for the full 80 minutes, even if the team playing into the wind enjoyed sustained periods on top in either half.

With that in mind, Mallinder was all the more impressed with how his side crafted a winner for George Pisi with little over 90 seconds left on the clock.

“We had a really good first half, into the elements and worked really hard to score two good tries. We just took our foot off a little bit in the second half and maybe lost a bit of our shape and organisation.

“But we then came back at Exeter and could well have scored from a number of scrums close to their line. To then score with less than two minutes to go was tremendous.”

It also provided Saints with a ninth win in a row in all competitions and with the Warriors coming to town on the back of an impressive showing against Leicester on Friday night, extending the run into double figures will be all the more challenging.
