Academy News SAINTS U18 31 EXETER U18 19 Mallinder hails ‘perfect’ end to Under-18 season

Having led his side to the Premiership Rugby Academies League title at Allianz Park, Saints Under-18 captain Harry Mallinder paid tribute to the team effort that brought a first piece of silverware to Franklin’s Gardens in 2013/14.

The youngsters put together a blistering first half against the previously undefeated Chiefs, full back Howard Packman going over twice in five minutes – the second the pick of the bunch as he rounded multiple Exeter defenders before applying a brilliantly improvised finish.

Mallinder added number three from a superb team move, as well as two conversions to open up a 19-point gap and while Exeter would hit back either side of the break, further scores from George Cox and George Furbank ensured the trophy was theirs as they re-assumed control playing into the wind..

“It was the perfect end to what has been a pretty long season,” Mallinder told SaintsTV post-match. “We’ve worked so hard together for it and I’m chuffed that we got the win together at the end.

“I’m very proud of the lads and it’s not just the 23 that are here today. Players have come in and out of the team but we’ve shown great resilience throughout.

“It’s the last game some of us will play together, but Mark Hopley and Phil Dowson told us before the game that these are the mates that you’re going to stick with for life. These are the games that create those friendships and from minute one to eighty we played for each other.”
