Club News Hewitt excited about supporter engagement

Northampton Saints chairman Tony Hewitt says that he believes that the club’s engagement with its supporters is as good as it has been at any time in recent years.

Hewitt was one of the speakers at the Saints’ third Season Ticket Holders Forum, when he brought supporters up-to-date with the latest developments at Franklin’s Gardens, including the news about the naming of the new North Stand as ‘The Barwell Stand’ and that the club is on target for a 14th successive year in the black, a record unparalleled anywhere in the Aviva Premiership.

Also speaking were deputy chairman John White, who discussed the latest news on Europe and the season structure, and recruitment and development manager Dusty Hare, who outlined the Saints Academy’s talent identification and development pathways – an apt presentation in the wake of the Under-18s’ title-winning Premiership Rugby Academies League campaign.

Director of rugby Jim Mallinder, chief executive Allan Robson and commercial director Brian Facer were also on hand to answer supporters’ questions, with topics ranging from player recruitment to away travel.

And Hewitt believes that the positive atmosphere in the room demonstrated how far the club has come in the last year.

“The engagement with the supporters is excellent, there’s no ‘them and us’,” he said. “We’re all on the same side and excited about where the club is heading, and I thought it was an excellent, positive Forum.

“Twelve months ago there was a bit of dissatisfaction and the supporters were frustrated. By having that first Forum we addressed those points to improve the engagement and get the spirit back in the club.

“This evening there was a great atmosphere in the room with everybody together excited about what could happen at the club.

“It’s vital for us as a board of directors to know what the engagement is like with our supporters and customers. We have to deal with all aspects of our business, and it is very important that we both have the regard for our past and excitement about where we’re going on this journey at the moment.”

The full interview with the Saints chairman, including his thoughts on the naming of the new North Stand as ‘The Barwell Stand’, will be in this week’s official Saints podcast, available to download or stream for free on any device by CLICKING HERE.
