Rugby News Lawes: England staying humble

Despite a comfortable 29-16 win over Wales that secured the Triple Crown, Courtney Lawes says that England are remaining grounded and hungry to improve.

It was a first Triple Crown for the side since 2003 and while Saint Lawes was named RBS Man of the Match for a gargantuan performance, the second row was keen to focus on the team’s efforts rather than his own.

“It was a fantastic win,” he told the RFU Podcast. “We dominated the game in a number of areas and it’s brilliant against such a strong Wales team, filled with Lions. We won the battle of the gainline and the contact area as well and our passing and distribution was good.

“We’re still growing as a team and Stuart keeps us humble, which is the most important thing. We’re always trying to improve.

“We’re a young team, we’re confident and we’ve still got room to grow so there are no down points at the minute.”

The Six Nations title is still within England’s grasp, though England will need either a mammoth win in Rome against Italy, or a favour from France who take on pace-setters Ireland in Paris.

Lawes insisted England won’t be distracted by elements out of their control.

“Stuart always talks about the performance before anything else. First and foremost we have to make sure we go out there and perform. Hopefully everything else will take care of itself.”
