Rugby News Lawes enjoying his rugby
Courtney Lawes will return to Franklin’s Gardens in good spirits this week, despite agonisingly missing out on a Six Nations title with England on Saturday evening.
On a personal level, the tournament ended with the Saint being named in most journalists’ team of the tournament.
Lawes was also acclaimed ‘forward of the tournament’ by the Telegraph and earned high praise from the likes of World Cup winning duo Sir Clive Woodward and Ben Kay for his second row partnership with Joe Launchbury.
The man himself says he is enjoying an extended run of rugby.
“I feel like I’m having a good season and staying fit, touch wood,” he told the RFU Podcast. “Just being able to go out there and enjoy my rugby again and getting involved in the games is good fun.”
Lawes and England finished their campaign with a thumping 52-11 win over Italy, but it wasn’t quite enough to seal the Six Nations title as Ireland held off France on Saturday evening to prevail on points difference.
The 25-year-old added that there are a huge amount of positives for the team moving forward, however.
“It was a good, hard fought win out there today with a lot of running to be done. I don’t think many people expected us to do that to Italy.
“We’ve got a pretty steady team now and there are going to be more young players coming through pushing us for our spots. We’ve all got to stay on our toes and I’m sure Stuart is going to have a lot of tough decisions when bringing them through and into the team.”
