Academy News SAINTS U17 15 GLOS 24 Winning run ends, but not without a fight

The Saints Under-17s lost their first game of 2014, though coach Mark Hopley was proud of the fighting spirit he saw from a group of youngsters playing largely above age group at Franklin’s Gardens.

A strong Gloucester side took the lead in the 22nd minute, extending the score to 12-0 just moments later as the hosts battled to clear their lines playing into a strong wind.

It had been a relatively even, albeit scrappy first half up to that double-hit from the Cherry and Whites, but the Saints responded well to drive forward and send Tosin Segun into the corner.

Turning around at 5-12 down, some brilliant handling from the hosts on halfway cut Gloucester open and with all-important field possession, Tom Emery took a quick tap and broke the line before feeding Sam Easton.

Gloucester hit back through a fine solo run from halfway but the Saints weren’t going away and more patient build-up played allowed Segun in for his second, again in the right corner, to once more close the gap to a single score.

A penalty chance went begging for Glos as both sides battled to swing the game in their favour but another breakaway score on the final whistle ended Saints’ hopes.

Academy coach Hopley was keen to focus on the positives of a battling display.

“We never like to lose but in terms of what we saw out there today, I was really pleased,” he told SaintsTV. “It was a very young side for us – I think only three of the lads were actually Under-17s.

“For the younger, Under-16 lads it was about getting a feel for the pace and the physicality of the game and I thought they did themselves proud in that sense.

“We’ve got another game coming up quickly against Saracens and now it’s about learning from the mistakes we made today. As coaches we can’t be afraid to give the lads that freedom to go out there and play and making those errors is the biggest way they will learn.”
