Academy News Young Saints star in England Under-18 win
Two of England Under-18's three Saints scored tries as their FIRA/AER European Championship defence began with a convincing 62-5 win over Portugal in Poznan.
Harry Mallinder led out a side also including Academies League winning clubmates Rotimi Segun and James Fish and it was pacey wing Segun who made his mark first with a quick-fire double in the opening 40.
Playing at inside centre, Mallinder would add a try of his own in the second half, cutting through the Portuguese backline, and the captain would also nail six of the 10 conversions.
It may have been a comprehensive opening victory for England, but Mallinder remained focus on the challenges they face in the days to come.
“We’re just pleased to kick this competition off with a win,” he told RFU.com. “The aim is to get better in each game we play, we know that there are things to work on, which we will do over the next few days.”
John Fletcher’s side now face Wales in the tournament semi-finals on Tuesday after their narrow 23-21 defeat of Scotland.
