Academy News Saints’ lucky 13 on form for England
A total of 13 Saints were in England representative action over the weekend and between them racked up a hat-trick of wins, a pair of tries and a man of the match performance.
Academy players from the Gardens featured for both England Under-19 and Under-17 at Broadstreet RFC as they locked horns with France in a double header on Saturday afternoon.
Wing Howard Packman scored one of three first half tries for the Under-19s as they won 28-15 - Sam Olver also on hand with a double figure haul from the tee. Jordan Onojaife started in the second row while fellow forward Lewis Ludlam also saw game time in the back row.
Prior to that victory, another Academy forward was named man of the match in England Under-17’s 29-25 defeat of the French, Tim Cardall one of six further Saints to turnout in the west midlands.
Maintaining the theme of scoring wings, Rotimi Segun’s fine run in internationals colours continued with a try – a third in four caps at Under-17 and Under-18 level – while Freddie Davison, Will Allman, Alex Moon and Jon Hawkins all featured in the pack.
The treble was completed on Sunday afternoon by a trio in an England Under-16 side that held off a late fight-back to win in Wales.
Centre Suva Ma’asi, prop George Cave and second row Ben Kelland all started the 24-22 triumph at Neath RFC – second caps for each after they helped beat Scotland a week ago.
There was also good news for Saints Under-18s centre Rory Hutchinson, who was included in Scotland’s Under-20 squad for the IRB Junior World Championship. Hutchinson makes it a quintet of Saints jetting to New Zealand in the summer, four of his teammates part of England’s travelling party.
