Club News Performance department internships available for 2014/15

Northampton Saints RFC is offering two full-time internships within the club’s Performance Department for the 2014/15 season.

The purpose of the posts is to provide support as directed and assist with the integration of strength and conditioning support into the overall rugby programme. The successful applicants will gain invaluable experience and expertise within a leading professional rugby club.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING INTERNSHIP
The role will involve:
- Working closely and contributing to a team of Strength and Conditioning coaches and physiotherapists
- Providing input into programming and delivery of strength and conditioning support to first team and Academy players
- Liaising with the Strength and Conditioning coaches and medics on a broad range of day-to-day duties

KEY SKILLS AND QUALITIES
- Enthusiastic, highly motivated and organised
- Good communication skills
- Strong appetite to learn

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum 2:1 qualification at degree level (or equivalent) in sports science or related area
- A sound understanding of the physiological demands of the professional rugby player
- Technically sound weight lifter, and previous experience of planning and delivering conditioning programmes in the gym and on the field
- Knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

SPORT SCIENCE INTERNSHIP
The role will involve:
- Working closely and contributing to a team of Strength and Conditioning coaches, physiotherapists and nutritionist
- Collecting, analysing and presenting daily wellness and screening data to the performance team
- Gathering, interpreting and presenting current research and best practice from all sport science disciplines
- Collating and presenting GPS and heart rate data during training sessions and during games
- Deliver recovery, hydration and nutritional strategies as directed by head of department
- Complete blood and biochemical testing and present results as directed by head of department
- Liaising with performance coaches and medics on a broad range of day-to-day duties

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum 2:1 qualification at degree level (or equivalent) in sports science / or related area
- Prior experience of sports science support with a team or individual
- A sound understanding of the physiological demands of the professional rugby player
- Basic understanding of GPS and interpretation of data
- Knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office and particularly Excel

Both roles are full-time, one-year positions. The posts will include weekend and evening duties on a regular basis.

This position is voluntary although the club will assist with helping to secure some external income. Additional benefits will include provision of food during work hours and work attire.
