Academy News Olver: No time to dwell on Italy win
While England’s Junior World Championship defence got off to a flying start with a 63-3 defeat of Italy, Saints fly half Sam Olver says the side have quickly turned their attentions to the always stern test of Australia on Friday.
The junior Wallabies also got up and running with victory in Round 1, seeing off Argentina 36-17, and the Group A match-up in Auckland could well determine who advances to the semi-finals.
“We’re pleased to kick this tournament off with a win against Italy – they made us work pretty hard for it, but we’ve got to be pleased with a 60-point win,” Olver told the RFU.com. “The main job for us now is to review and recover from that game and switch our attention to playing Australia on Friday.
“A few of the boys played against Australia for the Under-18s in December, so we’ll look to tap into that – but we know that if we perform to the best we can then we’ll have a good chance.”
With the Junior World Championship coinciding with England’s tour of New Zealand, the Under-20s are also due to receive a visit from their senior charges, including eight Aviva Premiership winning Saints, who flew out to join the touring party earlier this week.
“Some of the senior guys are due to come to our game as well, so it’ll be good to see the Saints guys if they come. Tom Stephenson is out with us now, and it’s been good to catch up with him about last Saturday – it was pretty amazing waking up to the news we’d won!
“All in all it’s been a pretty good week, but our focus is on Australia and doing all we can to put in a big performance against them.”
