England Under-20 moved into the Junior World Championship semi-finals with a third win from three, but the holders had to rely on Sam Olver’s coolly taken penalty a minute from time to see off Argentina 17-16 in Auckland.
The Saints fly half guided over his fourth kick of the afternoon as the clock ran down to ensure his country’s place in Sunday’s last four, Argentina having captured the lead with 10 minutes to play.
There was a full 80 minutes of action for Jordan Onojaife on debut, too, likewise returning Junior World Champion Tom Stephenson, while Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi made his third appearance of the tournament from the replacements bench at a sodden QBE Stadium.
Nick Walshe’s side now advance as 2nd seeds and will face Ireland, who bounced back from an opening defeat against France to top Pool B. England were 33-9 victors earlier this year when the two sides met in the Six Nations at Franklin’s Gardens.
Top seeds South Africa will take on either Australia or New Zealand in the second semi-final.
