Club News My Moment - Sam Smith
Following what only could be described as a the most disappointing game of the season versus a very strong, international filled Leinster side at Franklin Gardens I rather fearfully entered the Aviva Stadium with my brother for the rematch.
With less than 3 minutes to go the Saints had got a 9-13 lead. Thoughts of disappointing trips to Munster, Twickenham and The Millennium Stadium came to my mind. 'Not again!' I thought.
20 phases of attack from Leinster followed - many still hurting from losing to the All Blacks in the dying moments the Aviva weeks earlier. A cheer went up as Leinster fans thought they had scored! But no! Heaslip then fumbled the ball and Jamie Elliott pounced! Running the whole length of the pitch we could saviour the moment even longer!
As he ran towards the whitewash the sheer feeling of relief, joy and emotion came over me. I fell to the floor on my knees. I even started to cry with joy! "Look!" said a young Leinster Fan, "that man's crying!"
"Yes I am," I said. I looked to my brother and declared, "There's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be than right here right now!"
The rest of the night is a blur! But the rest of the season wasn't! We went on a 13 match winning run after this. The whole of Europe now know - This is the Saints' Time!
