Rugby News Harrison: Bring on the fifteens!
Teimana Harrison says that he can’t wait for the pre-season to start in earnest.
The Kiwi flanker was a try scorer in the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series Finals, but while he put in a committed performance throughout the evening he could not help Saints overcome either Gloucester or Leicester in their two matches.
Instead the men in green and gold fell to the overall Cup and Plate winners in what became a torrential Twickenham Stoop downpour.
And Harrison says that the weather made an already tough version of the sport even more challenging.
“It’s pretty hard even in the dry, especially when you’re more of a fifteens team,” he told SaintsTV. “And when it’s wet it makes it a bit harder!
“After the Gloucester game we knew we had to pull our heads out. We were pretty shocking, missing tackles and not supporting the ball carrier.
“We were unlucky towards the end of the second half against Leicester, although we made some silly mistakes, but with Sevens it can be a funny game with momentum. The bounce of the ball can put you on the back foot, which happened to us a couple of times.”
Harrison played in both the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series group stages as well as finals day, and he says that while the tournament ended in disappointment overall it has been a positive experience for him.
“Sevens is a good indicator of where your fitness is, although there’s not as much running in fifteens,” he added. “It also helps your skills and gives the forwards the same skills as the backs!
“Overall it’s been a positive end to the pre-season, so bring on the fifteens games!”
The Saints now go into their full pre-season preparations ahead of the Aviva Premiership campaign, with home matches against Rotherham, Leinster and Moseley all coming up over the next two weekends.
Tickets are on sale for these matches, as well as September’s home Aviva Premiership clashes with Gloucester, Bath and Sale.
