Rugby News Kahn: Saints come first before World Cup excitement

Kahn Fotuali’i has had an early chance to check out Samoa’s Rugby World Cup training base in Milton Keynes, but insists that his only focus for the time being is achieving more success with the Saints before he joins up with his international team mates next summer.

Fotuali’i was joined by George and Ken Pisi this week at Woughton on the Green’s playing fields, which as well as being the training base for MK Dons will host Samoa during next year’s showcase tournament.

The trio spent time passing on their skills and tips to rugby players from Milton Keynes, and Fotuali’i says that any excitement and anticipation about the tournament has to be put on the back-burner while he concentrates on playing well in black, green and gold.

“The World Cup is only a year away, and doing an event like this brings it a little bit closer and gets you excited,” he said. “But it’s still a year, and a lot can happen in between!

“I know that I’ve got a job to do here first with the Saints, and my mind is focused on trying to stay fit and healthy and playing some good rugby with Northampton.”

The Aviva Premiership is home to quite a few Samoan internationals, and the scrum-half is hoping that the support that they receive at club level will translate onto the international stage at England Rugby 2015.

“We’re hoping for some ‘home town’ support when we come to Milton Keynes,” he added. “We get a lot of support in Northampton as the Saints, so hopefully we’ll get that kind of backing as Samoan players when we take on Japan next year. We’ve got to be in the squad first though!”

Fotuali’i, the Pisis and the rest of the Saints start their big year of rugby with a home game against Gloucester on Friday, September 5th when the Aviva Premiership season gets underway at Franklin’s Gardens.
