Over the last three years, the Sportsmatch scheme has enabled the Saints Community team to take rugby into over 50 schools in the Northampton area that might not have otherwise received support from the club.
Through the support of firstly Travis Perkins and then Mirus IT Solutions, hundreds of students in Year 6 were introduced to Tag Rugby, the non-contact version of the sport that can be played outside or inside on all surfaces. The first phase culminated in a Tag Rugby festival at Franklin's Gardens.
Phase two saw schools receive additional coaching for Year 7 students, many of whom had been a part of the project in year one. This phase was designed to smooth the transition to the full contact version of the sport. This work also introduced elements of game understanding, especially attacking and defending.
